What Stifel Financial Corp. does
In the company’s own words
Stifel Financial Corp. (NYSE: SF) operates as a diversified financial services firm providing wealth management, institutional services, and investment banking to private clients, institutional investors, and corporate clients across the United States, Europe, and Canada. The company maintains its website at www.stifel.com.
Founded in 1890 as a partnership and reorganized as a Delaware corporation in 1983, Stifel has grown into a premier investment bank and wealth management platform through both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions. The company operates over 9,000 associates globally, including more than 2,300 financial advisors positioned across 402 branch offices in 48 states and the District of Columbia, along with international offices in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada. Client assets under management total approximately $551.9 billion.
The company operates through three primary segments: Global Wealth Management, Institutional Group, and Other. Global Wealth Management encompasses private client services through the consolidated Stifel branch system, offering securities transactions, financial planning, asset management, and banking services through Stifel Bancorp subsidiaries. The Institutional Group provides research, equity and fixed income sales and trading, investment banking, and public finance services focused on targeted industries including real estate, financial services, healthcare, technology, and energy. The company also operates through subsidiary firms including Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, a specialized broker-dealer; Stifel Independent Advisors, an independent contractor network; and 1919 Investment Counsel, an asset management firm.
Stifel Bancorp provides retail and commercial banking services including mortgage lending, securities-based lending, venture banking, and treasury solutions. Recent acquisitions have expanded the platform, including Finance 500 and CB Resource in 2024, a portion of B. Riley Financial's wealth management business in 2025, and Bryan, Garnier & Co., a European investment bank, also in 2025.
The company's business model emphasizes client-centric service, entrepreneurial culture, and long-term relationship building. Stifel maintains a modest securities inventory designed to facilitate client order flow rather than generate proprietary trading profits, positioning the firm as a relationship-driven advisor across wealth management and institutional services.
