Unum Group and its insurance and non-insurance subsidiaries deliver disability, life, accident, critical illness, dental, vision, and related services primarily through workplace-based distribution channels.
The company operates through five reportable segments. Unum US generates 65.4 percent of consolidated premium income and comprises group disability, group life and accidental death and dismemberment, and supplemental and voluntary lines of business. Within Unum US, group disability represents 44.4 percent of segment premiums, group life and accidental death and dismemberment accounts for 29.2 percent, voluntary benefits comprise 13.1 percent, individual disability represents 8.7 percent, and dental and vision products constitute 4.6 percent. Unum International contributes 10.0 percent of consolidated premiums through operations in the United Kingdom and Poland, with Unum UK offering group long-term disability, group life, and supplemental products, while Unum Poland focuses on individual and group life insurance with accident and health riders. Colonial Life generates 17.0 percent of premiums through accident, sickness, and disability products, life insurance, and cancer and critical illness coverage marketed to employees in public and commercial sectors. The Closed Block segment represents 7.6 percent of premiums and consists of group and individual long-term care and other insurance products no longer actively marketed. The Corporate segment includes investment income and corporate expenses not allocated to specific business lines.
