What Upstart Holdings, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Upstart Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: UPST) operates as the leading artificial intelligence lending marketplace, accessible at www.upstart.com. The company has fundamentally reimagined consumer credit by applying proprietary AI models to reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for American consumers.
Founded in 2012, Upstart's platform facilitates unsecured and secured credit products including personal loans, auto loans, and home equity lines of credit. The company's core innovation centers on "risk separation," a capability that uses advanced AI to more accurately quantify loan risk than traditional credit scoring systems. This approach has enabled Upstart to approve approximately 43% more borrowers while offering 33% lower average interest rates compared to traditional underwriting models, according to internal studies.
The Upstart ecosystem encompasses consumers, auto dealers, banks, credit unions, and institutional investors. Consumers access loans primarily through Upstart.com and through auto dealerships using Upstart Auto Finance software. During 2025, 91% of loans on the platform were fully automated with no human intervention. The company's lending partners, numbering over 100 as of year-end 2025, originate loans that are either retained, purchased by institutional investors, or held on Upstart's balance sheet. In 2025, institutional investors purchased 64% of loan originations, lending partners retained or purchased 26%, and Upstart held 10% on its balance sheet.
Upstart's AI capabilities extend across the entire lending lifecycle, incorporating approximately 30 proprietary machine learning models. The personal loan underwriting model alone expanded from 23 variables in 2014 to over 2,500 variables by 2025, trained on nearly 104 million repayment events. The platform applies AI to acquisition targeting, fraud detection, income verification, loan stacking identification, and prepayment prediction.
The company generates revenue primarily through platform and referral fees charged to lending partners and loan servicing revenue. The top three lending partners collectively originated 83% of facilitated loans and accounted for 61% of total revenue in 2025. Upstart's business model emphasizes positive unit economics on each transaction, targeting high growth rates alongside profitability through a cash-efficient platform architecture built on cloud-native technologies and containerized services on Amazon Web Services.
