What Western Digital does
In the company’s own words
Western Digital Corporation (Nasdaq: WDC) develops, manufactures and provides hard disk drive (HDD) data storage devices and solutions for cloud data centers, enterprise storage, edge computing, smart video, and client and consumer devices. Its customers include cloud service providers, computer manufacturers and other original equipment manufacturers, resellers, distributors and retailers. The business serves three end markets: Cloud, its largest, focused on high-capacity enterprise HDDs for public and private cloud environments; Client, which supplies HDDs for desktop and notebook computers; and Consumer, which offers external HDD storage products through retail and channel partners. Products are sold under the Western Digital and WD brands. The company designs and manufactures substantially all of the recording heads and magnetic media used in its HDDs, while relying on external suppliers for other components. Founded in 1970, Western Digital separated its flash-based products business in 2025 and now focuses on HDD technology. It employed approximately 40,000 people worldwide at the end of fiscal 2026, and Cloud accounted for 89% of net revenue that year. Its website is www.westerndigital.com.
