What Zebra Technologies does

In the company’s own words

Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: ZBRA) is a global leader in automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) solutions, serving customers across retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, healthcare, hospitality, and public sector industries. The company operates through two reportable segments: Connected Frontline (CF) and Asset Visibility and Automation (AVA). The CF segment encompasses mobile computing products, self-service and point-of-sale solutions through the recently acquired Elo brand, and workflow optimization software delivered via cloud-based subscriptions. The AVA segment includes barcode and card printing systems, data capture and machine vision offerings, RFID and real-time location systems (RTLS), supplies and sensors, and related services.

Zebra's comprehensive product portfolio spans rugged mobile computers, barcode scanners and imagers, thermal printers, RFID readers, specialty printing systems for labels and identification, machine vision cameras, and software applications designed to digitize and automate frontline operations. The company maintains approximately 10,700 employees across 129 facilities in 57 countries, with 44 percent of its workforce based in the United States. Zebra distributes its offerings globally through a direct sales force and an extensive network of over 10,000 channel partners operating in 179 countries.

The company's competitive advantages include its industry-leading market position, long-standing customer relationships, significant barriers to entry through specialized product requirements and high switching costs, commitment to innovation with approximately 2,790 engineers and design experts, and substantial scale advantages. Zebra holds approximately 1,850 trademark registrations and 8,000 patents and patent applications worldwide. Recent acquisitions including Photoneo in February 2025 and Elo Holdings in September 2025 have expanded the company's machine vision and self-service capabilities.

Zebra's business model emphasizes recurring revenue through services, supplies, sensors, and software subscriptions supported by a large installed base of purpose-built offerings. The company maintains manufacturing partnerships with electronics manufacturing services companies and joint design manufacturers primarily in Asia-Pacific and Mexico, while operating repair service hubs across its served regions.
