In the company’s own words
Chimera Investment Corporation (NYSE: CIM) operates as a diversified real estate investment company focused on residential mortgage assets and related investments. The company is structured as a real estate investment trust for federal income tax purposes and maintains an internally managed operational model.
The company operates through two reportable segments: Investment Portfolio and Residential Origination. The Investment Portfolio segment manages direct investments and third-party advisory services across residential mortgage loans, mortgage-backed securities, mortgage servicing rights, and other real estate-related assets. As of December 31, 2025, the Investment Portfolio was allocated approximately 65 percent to residential mortgage loans, 23 percent to Agency mortgage-backed securities, 5 percent to Non-Agency residential mortgage-backed securities, and less than 1 percent to mortgage servicing rights interests. The Residential Origination segment consists of HomeXpress Mortgage Corp., a specialty mortgage lender acquired in October 2025 that originates consumer non-qualified mortgages, investor business purpose loans, and agency-conforming residential mortgage loans. HomeXpress originated and acquired approximately 3.4 billion dollars in total mortgage loans during 2025, with substantially all being consumer non-qualified mortgages and investor business purpose loans.
Chimera executes its business strategy through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions. The company utilizes leverage to enhance returns, financing investments through securitizations, warehouse facilities, repurchase agreements, and debt and equity capital issuances. The company sponsors securitization programs that pool residential mortgage loans and issue securities, with the company typically retaining subordinate classes as first-loss securities.
The company maintains investment guidelines designed to preserve its REIT qualification and exemption from registration under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Chimera's integrated platform combines mortgage lending capabilities with investment management and advisory services, enabling the company to originate, manage, and invest across a diversified range of mortgage assets while generating income from net interest spreads, loan origination and sale activities, and third-party advisory service fees.
