What Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings, Inc. does

In the company’s own words

Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: DNA) operates as a synthetic biology platform company dedicated to making biology easier to engineer. The company maintains its headquarters in Boston and operates through two primary business segments: cell engineering and biosecurity.

The cell engineering segment provides biological research and development services and tools to government and commercial customers across medicine, agriculture, industrial biotechnology, and strategic government applications. Ginkgo's cell engineering platform combines proprietary automation technologies, including its Reconfigurable Automation Cart systems, with in-house software, machine learning, and generative AI models for cell programming. The company maintains massive databases of DNA sequences and functional performance data, along with reusable biological assets that enable faster and more predictable cell programming. Cell engineering service offerings span a spectrum from standardized tools and data generation services to customized end-to-end solutions. These include protein engineering and production for biopharmaceutical applications, genetic medicines development, small molecule and biologics services, crop nutrition and protection solutions, plant trait discovery, industrial biotechnology applications, and fermentation and scale-up capabilities. The company operates approximately 12,000 square feet of greenhouse facilities and maintains pilot plant capacity ranging from 5 to 3,000 liters.

The biosecurity segment provides services to government customers working to identify, monitor, prevent, and mitigate biological threats. This segment operates through two core offerings: Canopy, which generates high-value genomic data from strategically positioned monitoring nodes such as airports and border checkpoints, and Horizon, a digital surveillance, analytics, and insights platform that detects and monitors biothreats worldwide. The biosecurity platform leverages genetic information as a critical data asset for next-generation threat detection and response.

Ginkgo generates revenue through service fees for research and development work, support services, and data generation programs, typically ranging from weeks to several years in duration. The company also structures value-sharing arrangements with customers through royalties, milestone payments, and equity interests aligned with commercialization success.
