What Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. does
In the company’s own words
Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. (Nasdaq: GO) operates an extreme value retail grocery business through a distinctive independent operator model. The company's website is located at https://investors.groceryoutlet.com. As of January 3, 2026, Grocery Outlet operates 570 stores across 16 states including California, Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Idaho, Nevada, Maryland, Ohio, New Jersey, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Delaware, Kentucky, and Virginia. The company employs approximately 2,207 people, with 562 in corporate roles and the remainder distributed across distribution centers and company-operated stores.
The core business centers on offering quality, name-brand consumables and fresh products at prices typically 40 to 70 percent below conventional retailers through a treasure hunt shopping experience. Grocery Outlet's differentiated model combines centralized opportunistic purchasing with decentralized store operations. The company sources products through flexible buying strategies that capitalize on manufacturer overruns, order cancellations, and packaging changes, leveraging decades-long supplier relationships. Of the 570 stores, 529 are operated by independent operators who function as small business owners, while 41 are company-operated, including 39 under the United Grocery Outlet brand acquired in April 2024.
Independent operators maintain broad decision-making authority over merchandising, local marketing, inventory management, and staffing while sharing approximately 50 percent of store-level gross profits with the company. This model reduces corporate overhead and labor-related fixed costs while creating local community connections. Stores average approximately 13,600 square feet and offer an ever-changing assortment of opportunistic products complemented by everyday staples across grocery, produce, refrigerated and frozen foods, beer and wine, fresh meat and seafood, general merchandise, and health and beauty care. The company introduced approximately 485 private-label stock keeping units beginning in the third quarter of fiscal 2024.
Grocery Outlet's trademarks include "Grocery Outlet Bargain Market," "WOW!," "NOSH," and "Bargain Bliss." The company distributes inventory through nine primary distribution centers, four of which it operates for dry goods and five operated by third parties for cold items, produce, and dry goods. Approximately nine percent of net sales in fiscal 2025 were Electronic Benefits Transfer payments, primarily related to SNAP benefits.
