What MEDIFAST INC does

In the company’s own words

Medifast, Inc. (NASDAQ: MED) operates as a 40-year-old health and wellness company focused on metabolic health and weight management through a coach-guided lifestyle system. The company's primary business model centers on independent coaches who provide personalized support to clients seeking to improve their metabolic health and achieve sustainable weight loss. As of the fourth quarter of 2025, Medifast maintained a network of approximately 16,100 active earning independent coaches and has impacted over 3 million lives since its founding.

The company's core offerings include OPTAVIA Fuelings, which are scientifically formulated meal replacement products containing 24 vitamins and minerals, along with several lifestyle plans including the 5 & 1 Plan, Optimal Weight 4 & 2 & 1 Plan, and specialized programs like OPTAVIA ACTIVE and OPTAVIA ASCEND designed for fitness-focused clients and those using GLP-1 medications. Medifast also provides the Habits of Health Transformational System, a proprietary framework for sustainable behavior change and habit development. The company recently introduced Metabolic Synchronization, a science-based approach targeting metabolic dysfunction through targeted fat reduction while preserving lean muscle mass.

Medifast operates through wholly-owned subsidiaries including Jason Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which operates a manufacturing facility in Owings Mills, Maryland that produces approximately 40 percent of total unit sales. The remaining 60 percent of products are manufactured by co-manufacturers using proprietary formulas. The company's direct-to-consumer model ships products directly to clients rather than through coach inventory management, distinguishing it from traditional multi-level marketing structures.

The addressable market for weight loss is estimated at over 30 billion dollars, with approximately 93 percent of U.S. adults categorized as metabolically unhealthy. Medifast's competitive advantages include its emphasis on personalized human coaching, with approximately 90 percent of coaches having been clients first, combined with its scientific heritage of over 103 peer-reviewed publications and 33 completed research studies. The company's website is located at www.medifast.com.
