What Minerva Neurosciences, Inc. does
In the company’s own words
Minerva Neurosciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: NERV) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing proprietary product candidates to treat central nervous system diseases. The company's website is www.minervaneurosciences.com.
Minerva's lead product candidate is roluperidone, currently in development for treating negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Roluperidone works by blocking serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, sigma-2 receptors, and alpha-adrenergic subtypes, mechanisms designed to address negative symptoms such as lack of motivation, inability to experience positive emotions, and diminished emotional expression without the side effects associated with existing antipsychotic therapies. In August 2022, the company submitted a New Drug Application to the FDA, which issued a Complete Response Letter in February 2024 requesting an additional Phase 3 confirmatory trial. The company is preparing to initiate the C19 trial in the second quarter of 2026, designed to enroll 380 patients with expected topline efficacy results in the second half of 2027 and relapse assessment data in the second half of 2028.
Beyond schizophrenia, roluperidone is being explored for potential therapeutic applications in conditions including apathy in dementia, autism spectrum disorders, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and depression. The company has filed an Investigational New Drug application for apathy in dementia and received FDA clearance.
Minerva also holds rights to seltorexant, a selective orexin 2 receptor antagonist co-developed with Janssen for treating insomnia and major depressive disorder. In January 2021, the company sold its royalty rights to seltorexant to Royalty Pharma for sixty million dollars in upfront payment plus up to ninety-five million dollars in potential milestone payments.
The company has accumulated significant operating losses since inception and has not generated revenue from product sales or licensing. Minerva holds exclusive worldwide rights to roluperidone outside certain Asian countries through a license agreement with Tanabe Pharma Corporation. The company relies on third-party contract manufacturers for production and does not currently maintain internal manufacturing facilities.
