The company manufactures a comprehensive array of handguns including revolvers and pistols, long guns encompassing modern sporting rifles, pistol caliber carbines, and lever-action rifles, along with handcuffs, firearm suppressors, and related firearm accessories for sale to firearm enthusiasts, collectors, hunters, sportsmen, competitive shooters, individuals seeking personal protection, and law enforcement and military agencies both domestically and internationally.
Founded in 1852 by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson, Smith & Wesson represents over 170 years of American manufacturing and engineering expertise. The company acquired Smith & Wesson from Tomkins Corporation in 2001 and underwent a significant corporate restructuring in 2020 when it completed the separation of its outdoor products and accessories business. In 2021, the company announced a relocation of its headquarters and significant operations to Maryville, Tennessee, completed in 2023.
The company operates four manufacturing facilities totaling approximately 1.3 million square feet: a 645,000 square-foot facility in Maryville, Tennessee; a 575,000 square-foot facility in Springfield, Massachusetts; and two facilities totaling 44,000 square feet in Houlton, Maine. Smith & Wesson sells its products under the Smith & Wesson and Gemtech brands, with the latter representing its firearm suppressor line acquired in 2017.
