What UWM Holdings Corp does
In the company’s own words
UWM Holdings Corporation (NYSE: UWMC) is the publicly traded parent company of United Wholesale Mortgage, LLC, the largest overall residential mortgage lender and largest purchase lender in the United States by closed loan volume. Operating exclusively through the wholesale channel, UWM originates primarily conforming and government-backed loans across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The company was founded in 1986 and headquartered in Pontiac, Michigan, operating at www.uwm.com.
UWM's business model focuses on originating mortgage loans through independent mortgage brokers rather than competing directly with borrowers, creating a partnership-based approach that differentiates it from retail mortgage lenders. The company maintains relationships with over 13,000 independent broker businesses representing approximately 57,000 loan officers, of which roughly 35,000 submitted loans to UWM during 2025. Through the first nine months of 2025, UWM originated 42.5 percent of loans closed through the wholesale channel and 8.4 percent of all first lien residential mortgages across all origination channels.
The company's core operations encompass loan origination, underwriting, closing, and secondary market sales. Approximately 90 percent of loans are sold to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac or transferred to Ginnie Mae pools. UWM also generates revenue from mortgage servicing rights retained on originated loans, currently utilizing a third-party sub-servicer while building an in-house servicing platform expected to transition substantially all servicing by the end of 2026.
UWM employs approximately 9,100 team members, substantially all based at its Pontiac corporate campus. The company has invested significantly in proprietary technology platforms including EASE, its loan origination system, BOLT for underwriting acceleration, and various artificial intelligence tools designed to streamline the mortgage process. The company delivers an average of 15 business days from loan application to clear-to-close and maintains an 87.5 percent average monthly client Net Promoter Score.
The company's strategic focus centers on wholesale channel leadership, technology innovation, high-quality loan origination, and operational efficiency while managing interest rate and market risks through its capital markets team.
