Virgin Galactic operates a differentiated commercial spaceflight business centered on providing suborbital spaceflights to space tourists and conducting scientific research missions. The company's core offering is a multi-day spaceflight experience that includes comprehensive training at Spaceport America in New Mexico, culminating in an approximately 90-minute flight featuring several minutes of weightlessness and views of Earth from space. The company has flown 23 paying astronauts to date and maintains reservations for approximately 675 future astronauts representing approximately $188 million in expected future revenue.
The company's spaceflight system comprises three primary technological components: the launch vehicle, a twin-fuselage carrier aircraft designed to transport spaceships to approximately 45,000 feet before release; the spaceship, a rocket-powered winged vehicle designed for reusability across hundreds of missions; and a hybrid rocket propulsion system using solid fuel and liquid oxidizer.
